Argentine superstar Lionel Messi’s two-and-a-half-year contract at Inter Miami is scheduled to end with the 2025 season, with an option reportedly for an extension for another 12 months.
Messi, 36, signed one of the most complex contracts in soccer history when he agreed to play for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
The contract supposedly includes agreements with Apple, Major League Soccer, and Adidas all tied in as Messi just being in MLS will make the league a lot of money.
When you add his playing contract and the other commercial deals linked with it, the total value of Messi’s contract is up to $60 million per year.
He also has an option to own a stake in Inter Miami after his contract ends. It is expected to end in late December 2025.
However, Lionel Messi is more than aware that the clock is ticking on his playing career.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said in an exclusive interview with ESPN that he plans on retiring once he is done playing for the club.
He declared that there would not be another second act in Major League Soccer, or a return to the European leagues or back home in Argentina.
“Inter Miami will be the last club in my career,” said Messi.
Messi, who turns 37 on June 24, joined the Herons last year after playing for Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
In the interview, Messi said he has done this all his life and he loves playing football. He enjoys the practices and the day-to-day, the games and said the fear is always there that it was all coming to an end.
It was a difficult move for him to leave Europe and come to Miami.
The fact that they (Argentina) won the World Cup helped a lot to see things from a different perspective, he said.
Messi said he tries not to think about it too much and enjoys whatever time is left and has a good time with the club and his teammates who have become friends.
The football superstar led Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Messi along with Spanish pair Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba led Inter Miami to finals in 2023 and got them their first cup in the league, beating Nashville on penalties.
