There’s no stopping Simone Biles, who is considered one of the greatest gymnasts of all time and has carved her path with unparalleled brilliance and uniqueness.
Born on March 14, 1997, in Columbus, Ohio, Simone Biles started her gymnastics journey at the age of only six, which was destined for greatness right from the beginning.
A little too young to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics, Biles shot to fame in 2013.
At the age of 16, she won two gold medals at the Antwerp Championships, including the all-around title.
There, she introduced the world to a groundbreaking move on the floor exercise — “the Biles”, a double layout with a half twist, which has now been cemented into gymnastics history.
With four gold medals in the World Championships in 2014 and another four in 2015, the young phenomenon was already a formidable force to reckon with heading into her first Olympics at the 2016 Rio Games.
Simone Biles, an American artistic gymnast, secured gold in the all-around, team, vault, and floor exercises, and also claimed a bronze medal on the balance beam. Overall, throughout her career, Biles has 7 Olympic medals — four gold, one silver, and two bronze.
The Americans continued dominating gymnastics. Her indomitable spirit was evident once again at the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart, where she triumphed with five golds, including the all-around title.
There, she astounded judges by attempting a new move, the “Biles II” — a double tucked backflip with a triple twist. Her name is now synonymous with five distinct gymnastic moves across the floor, balance beam, and vault.
As she entered the 2020 Tokyo Games, expectations reached a peak. Biles added two more Olympic medals to her tally, making it a remarkable seven. However, she withdrew from most events, citing mental health concerns.
Her struggles with the “twisties,” a mental block during aerial maneuvers, were laid bare.
Her decision to prioritize mental well-being sparked controversies and much-needed conversations about the immense pressure athletes face and their mental health challenges. Ever since she has become a mental health advocate.
In a 2023 interview, Biles told Olympics.com she was making more efforts to take care of her mind and body, which included therapy at least once a week.
At the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, Biles won five new medals, including four golds, and amassed a total of 30 career medals.
Her journey will continue, propelling her forward towards the much-awaited Paris 2024 Olympics.
