Katy Perry has announced to leave American Idol after seven seasons as a judge on the talent show.

The 39-year-old singer appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live Monday night and made the announcement when Jimmy Kimmel asked her how long she would stay on the singing competition show.

Shocking many fans, Perry, the “California Gurls” singer, said she thinks this probably will be her last show, her last season for Idol.

Hinting at releasing new music, Perry explained her decision and said she wanted to “go see the world”.

However, Perry has been a judge on American Idol, the ABC show, since 2018.

Explaining her decision, the Roar singer said it’s connected her with the heart of America, but she feels like she needs to go out and feel that pulse to her own beat.

The California Girls singer appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live ahead of the premiere of American Idol’s 22nd season on Sunday, where she sat on the judging panel alongside soul and R&B legend Lionel Richie and country singer Luke Bryan.

She also reflected on her performance for King Charles III at his televised Coronation Concert in May last year.

Perry shot to fame in 2008 with the song I Kissed A Girl and her last album Smile was released in 2020.

The singer joined American Idol in its sixteenth season as part of its reboot on ABC in 2018.

Perry is married to actor Orlando Bloom and the couple have a daughter named Daisy Dove, aged three.
