Robert De Niro is a Hollywood actor famous for his uncompromising portrayals of violent and coarse roles and later for his comical depiction of cranky old men.

His first film was The Wedding Party, directed by Brian De Palma, filmed in 1963 and released in 1969.

De Niro’s latest include Martin Scorcese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon (2023), Laura Terruso’s About My Father (2023) and Joker (2019) by Todd Phillips.

Born to two Greenwich Village artists, De Niro dropped out of school at 16 to join the Stella Adler Conservatory of Acting to study acting.

After acting in a couple of Off-Off-Broadway plays, he got his first big screen role in The Wedding Party.

Since then, he appeared in a number of minor films, the most noteworthy being The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight (1971).

His performance in Bang the Drum Slowly (1973) earned him wide recognition as an excellent actor. Following that, his first association with director Martin Scorsese was in Mean Streets (1973). He would later work in some of Scorcese’s most celebrated works.

Francis Ford Coppola, who won the Academy Award for The Godfather (1972) for best picture, was so impressed with De Niro’s work in Mean Streets that he offered him the role of a young Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II (1974). De Niro didn’t even need to do a screen test.

De Niro’s take on the role which was created by Marlon Brando in the first Godfather film, earned him a best supporting actor Oscar and made him an international star.

Following The Godfather II, De Niro worked with some of cinema’s most celebrated directors in films such as Bernardo Bertolucci’s 1900 (1976), Elia Kazan’s The Last Tycoon (1976), and Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter (1978). The last one received the Oscar for best picture.

However, it was his movies with Scorsese for which De Niro earned a reputation for masterfully portraying extremely dark and unappealing figures.

He received an Oscar nomination for his role in Taxi Driver (1976), and won the Oscar for best actor Raging Bull (1980). De Niro spent weeks driving a taxi in New York City before the Taxi Driver began filming, and he gained more than 50 pounds (about 23 kg) to portray boxer La Motta in Raging Bull.

By the end of the 70s, De Niro was considered one of the best actors of his generation.

In the 80s, De Niro acted in a series of box office failures that have nevertheless become cult favorites.

Scorcese reunited with De Niro for GoodFellas (1990) for a brutal look at organized crime. They further collaborated in Cape Fear (1991) and Casino (1995).

In 1993, De Niro starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in This Boy’s Life.

De Niro appeared in Michael Mann’s crime thriller Heat (1995), which brought him face to face with Al Pacino.

The two and Scorcese, along with Joe Pesci, returned with another mob film The Irishman (2019).

Also in 2019, Joker was released — a gritty origin story about the iconic Batman villain, where De Niro played a talk-show host opposite Joaquin Phoenix.
