Nancy Kerrigan is an American former figure skater who won two Olympic medals in figure skating. Kerrigan received a bronze medal after competing first internationally at the World Championships in 1991 while she won a silver in 1994.
Nancy Kerrigan came to the limelight after US figure skaters were killed in a plane crash. Some 67 people were killed after a collision of an American Airlines passenger jet with an Army helicopter Wednesday night at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport near Washington, D.C.
Three soldiers and over a dozen figure skaters were among the 67 victims while three soldiers were on board the helicopter.
The plane was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members during the crash late Wednesday.
Nancy Kerrigan among the Skating Club of Boston and alumni joined the media to mourn the loss of members and their families aboard the American Airlines flight.
Kerrigan moved to the US Nationals in 1992, qualifying her for the Olympic team. The skater finished behind American gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi.
After the 1992 Olympics, she appeared poised to move up to the top spot in world figure skating.
Her greatest rival in the US was Tonya Harding, who finished fourth at the Albertville Olympics.
