Gavin Creel performed the role of Dr Pomatter in musical “Waitress” composed by Sara Bareilles on Broadway in 2019 and on the West End in 2020.
Gavin Creel was a Broadway veteran who secured a Tony Award for “Hello, Dolly!” and nominations for “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and “Hair”.
He died on Monday of a rare and aggressive form of cancer at the age of 48.
Tony Awards in a post on X, formerly Twitter, termed Creel’s death a “devastating loss.”
According to the post, his “extraordinary talent, kindness, and passion lit up the stage and hearts.
Gavin Creel achieved the Olivier Award for “The Book of Mormon.”
Creel died at home in Manhattan, said his publicist Matt Polk.
The following season, Creel was picked for the role of Cornelius Hackl, opposite Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce, in the 2017 tribute of “Hello, Dolly!” by Jerry Zaks.
Creel’s long career on Broadway spanned for 20 years. He made his debut in “Thoroughly Modern Millie” as Jimmy Smith in 2002, a role that won him his first Tony nomination.
He was cast in Ryan Murphy’s 2021 miniseries “American Horror Stories” opposite Matt Bomer.
His solo concert in 2022 was filmed for the premiere episode – “Stars Onstage at Westport Country Playhouse” of PBS.
Creel is survived by his mother, father, his two sisters, and his partner, and a host of friends, relatives, and well-wishers to mourn his death.
