Family Communication

Any family dynamic is always improved through communication. Openness is the cornerstone of many relationships, but at the same time many families are also quite closed. Which can not only be problematic, but for many quite saddening too.

That’s because we don’t want anyone to suffer in silence and if our loved ones are struggling, then we want them to reach out, tell us, and put an end to such struggles.

Today, more of us are struggling than ever before, whether it be financial problems, mental health, relationships or increasingly, addiction issues, with the likes of alcohol, drugs and gambling becoming more prominent in society. But you can’t help someone find a rehab centre or aid with financial worries if you don’t know about it.

Creating a family dynamic that encourages communication is more important than ever before, and there are several top tips out there that will help you do that. This includes:

Establish Openness

First and foremost, the foundation of good communication comes from openness. From the off, we should encourage family members to share their thoughts, express concerns and create a non-judgemental atmosphere. It can be difficult to begin with but making a conscious effort can see that start to happen over time.

Schedule Regular Family Meetings

That conscious effort could come from scheduling a family meeting. You can do this weekly, bi-weekly or over a longer period of time. Set time aside to share updates on life, plan activities as well as addressing any issues or concerns. This will give a set time each week to share any worries, while you can encourage responsibility, participation and ownership.

Practice Active Listening

As well as speaking out, listening actively should also be encouraged. Teach family members to listen attentively without interrupting or formulating responses prematurely. Avoid any distractions and encourage others to show genuine interest. This will help the building of empathy and strengthen connections when loved ones are showing their more vulnerable sides.

Be Mindful of Nonverbal Communication

Teaching about active listening is important, but so is understanding the nonverbal cues in communication. When encouraging communication in a family dynamic, understanding our nonverbal communication and being mindful of the likes of body language and facial expressions is really important as it can either be discouraging or encouraging for those speaking out about their thoughts and feelings. Nonverbal signs such as maintaining eye contact, smiling where appropriate and nodding can all be encouraging in getting people to open up.

Resolve Conflicts Constructively

There will always be conflict in family relationships, but how it is managed is instrumental too. Encourage constructive resolutions that put communication and active listening at the heart, while also seeking mutually beneficial solutions. Encourage apologies, forgiveness and learning from every situation.

Celebrate Achievements and Milestones

On the flip side, as well as resolving conflict, you should encourage being together and celebrating achievements and milestones. Showing enthusiasm and support with these things can create a positive family culture that will not only unite and strengthen the dynamic, but also be encouraging to reach out during more difficult periods.

Lead by Example

Whether you’re reading this, are a parent, a guardian or someone wanting to bring your family closer together. The simple answer is, lead by example. If you want people to be more open, you should be more open with them. Demonstrate effective communication, show your vulnerabilities, your caring side and actively listen. Do that, and the rest will follow.

Foster Individual Relationships

Finally, recognise the uniqueness of each family member and foster individual relationships. Spend one-on-one time with each family member to strengthen personal connections and encourage open dialogue. Tailor communication strategies to suit each person’s personality and preferences.
