Technoblade, a renowned YouTuber known for his amusing Minecraft videos, died Thursday after a year-long struggle with cancer, his family reported.
Last summer, he disclosed that he had sarcoma, rare cancer affecting the body’s connective tissues.
People often grow quite connected to their favorite social media characters, and Technoblade was one of those people. Alex, as Techno or Technoblade, began his YouTube channel in October 2013 at the age of 14 and quickly rose to prominence for his Minecraft videos and partnerships with other notable YouTubers and Twitch streamers such as Dream.
By 2022, he was to have nearly 11 million subscribers to his YouTube channel and nearly a million Twitch followers.
On June 30, 2022, the father of the 23-year-old content producer uploaded one final video on Technoblade’s channel to announce his son’s death from stage four cancer.
The video begins with a statement made by Technoblade himself only eight hours before his death. Thank you everybody for your support throughout the years, he said. If I had another hundred lives, I believe I would choose to be Technoblade again and again, since those were the sweetest years of my life.
In the remaining video, Technoblade’s father discusses how difficult it was for his son to come up with the last message for his fans. His illness, the medical equipment attached to him, and the uninspiring environment all hampered his ability to concentrate and write.
After a two-month hiatus, Technoblade returned to his channel in August 2021 and explained in a video that he had been diagnosed with stage four cancer in June. He first felt pain in his arm, which spread to his shoulder after a few days and began to swell.
The content producer went to the hospital, starting to think he had broken a bone but was instead given a much more serious diagnosis. As he underwent chemotherapy, Technoblade’s output to his channel naturally decreased.
