In 2009, a film called Avatar came from nowhere and became the highest-grossing film in history. Though it was eventually beaten by Avengers: Endgame, a recent release has seen Avatar reclaim the title of the biggest film ever. Its current gross is $2.85 billion, an awe-inspiring feat.

With the film being this successful, a sequel was inevitable. A second instalment hasn’t been released at the time of writing, but it’s on its way, and we know a lot about it.

The Avatar Sequel: Basic Details

The sequel’s full title was recently announced as Avatar: The Way of Water. It will have a full cinema release and will be coming out on 16 December 2022, some 13 years after the original.

James Cameron is, of course, the driving force behind the project. As well as being the director, he’s co-written the screenplay, co-produced it, and has come up with the story, along with a small team of other creatives.

Like the first one, Avatar: The Way of Water will be distributed by 20th Century Studios. Many of the cast members from the first film will be reprising their roles. It’s been reported that while Sigourney Weaver will be returning, she’ll not be playing the same character.

The distant moon of Pandora is the setting once again. The sequel introduces us to the moon’s underwater environments and will give us a look at its oceans and seas. According to an official teaser, it’s set more than a decade after the first, and it focuses on the Sully family as they fight for survival and face tragedies in the process. One thing that hasn’t been confirmed is the film’s run time. Given that the first one runs for 162 minutes, the sequel will likely have a similar length.

The Avatar Sequel: Production History

When a release date for Avatar: The Way of Water was announced, fans breathed a sigh of relief. This is because the film has been delayed umpteen times over the last decade. In 2010, after the first film was a major success, James Cameron announced that two sequels would come out in 2014 and 2015.

There were more delays, and then in April 2016, it was announced that there would be four sequels. Each would have a budget of $250 million, slightly more than the first one’s $237 million. Preliminary shooting finally began on 15 August 2017, with the principal shooting starting just over a month later on 25 September. According to various reports, the plan was to produce all four sequels more or less simultaneously.

The Avatar Sequel: Will It Be a Success?

Spider-Man: No Way Home proved that cinema releases can still be successful. It grossed over $1 billion just two weeks after coming out! Given how much the first Avatar film made, there’s every chance the upcoming sequel will be a blockbuster. Will it overtake the original to become the highest-grossing film in the world? We’ll have to wait and see.

There’s no doubt that Avatar: The Way of Water will attract a lot of attention when it comes out. But will it connect with audiences? One thing about the original people have commented on is that its characters aren’t memorable, and its plot isn’t the best. It also never had much of an impact on pop culture. Franchises like Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Marvel are huge in pop culture; Avatar simply isn’t. It never had the same cultural impact as those franchises, despite the best efforts of the marketing team. At the peak of Avatar’s success, you could buy the Avatar video game, lots of Avatar merch, or even play on an Avatar-themed slot machine.

Those machines and many others are still available at the best online casinos, where you can play hundreds of different slot machines. They even have welcome bonuses for new customers. Claiming an online bonus is easy, simply pick your bonus, join the casino, and find the bonus on their site. The best casino bonuses include a £100 bonus + 50 free spins and a 100% refund bonus of up to £111. Even if the Avatar sequel turns out to be a flop, you can still enjoy all the games inspired by the original.
