Bill Hayes, who starred in the soap opera “Days of Our Lives” over five decades, has died. He was 98.

The actor breathed his last on Friday surrounded by family, his agent told the BBC. However, the family has not revealed the cause of his death.

He left behind his wife Seaforth-Hayes and his son William Foster Hayes IV to mourn his death.

A spokesperson for ‘Days of Our Lives’ told PEOPLE that, with a heavy heart, we share the passing of our beloved Bill Hayes, one of the longest-running characters on Days of our Lives.

Five years after the show’s debut, Hayes played the character of Doug Williams on the daytime serial since 1970 and met his real-life wife, the actress Susan Seaforth Hayes, while filming the series.

The statement issued by the ‘Days of Our Lives’ also read Hayes and his wife remained the foundation of the Williams-Horton family spanning over 50 years.

The Daytime Emmys’ Lifetime Achievement Award honoured the couple in 2018.

Born in Harvey, Illinois, in 1925, Hayes began his career as a musician with a hit song, “The Ballad of Davy Crockett”.

He subsequently began to focus more on acting and landed his most notable role on NBC’s Days of Our Lives in February 1970 as a convict.

He, last June, celebrated his 98th birthday on the set of the American daytime soap, flanked by co-stars.
