Former Connecticut Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, the first Jewish vice-presidential nominee of a major party, has died at the age of 82.

Joe Lieberman breathed his last in New York City due to complications from a fall Wednesday afternoon, said the former US senator’s family.

His wife Hadassah and other loved ones were at his side during that time, his family said in the statement.

Joe Lieberman served in the Senate for over two decades.

He was the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000, whose conscience and independent streak later led him on a journey away from his home in the Democratic Party.

Joe Lieberman ran with former Vice President Al Gore in the presidential election in 2000.

Al Gore issued a statement on X, known as Twitter, Wednesday night, and called Joe Lieberman a man of integrity.

However, former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney defeated the pair.

In his own statement, Bush also expressed deep shock at the demise of Lieberman, referring to him as “one of the most decent people in Washington.”
