After her win, Congratulations poured in from across the globe after Claudia Sheinbaum was elected Mexico’s first female president on Monday, sparking hope for change in a country rife with gender-based violence and drug-related crimes.

Supporters waving flags sang and danced to mariachi music late into the night after the former Mexico City mayor won Sunday’s election in a landslide victory.

Addressing cheering crowds, the 61-year-old ruling party candidate took a minute to express gratitude to the millions of men and women who voted for her on the historic day.

US President Joe Biden has welcomed Sheinbaum’s “historic election” and said he looked forward to working with her.

He called the Mexican president-elect to congratulate her.

Biden said in a statement that he look forward to working closely with Sheinbaum in the spirit of partnership and friendship that reflects the enduring bonds between our two countries.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the other key North American ally of Mexico, also congratulated her and said he was looking forward to working closely with the president-elect to further strengthen the friendship between Canada and Mexico, which is rooted in cultural connections, trade, and investment.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a fellow leftist such as Sheinbaum herself, hailed a “victory for democracy” and vowed to widen economic relations between two of the biggest economies in Latin America.

He said he was looking forward to visiting Mexico later in the year to strengthen trade ties between the countries.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Chilean President Gabriel Boric, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel were among other leaders offering congratulations.

Sheinbaum, a scientist and a climate activist, won nearly 59 percent of votes with more than 90 percent of ballots counted in Mexico election, according to the National Electoral Institute.

That was at least 30 percent ahead of her main rival conservative Xochitl Galvez, and nearly 50 percent ahead of the only man who ran, centrist Jorge Alvarez Maynez.

Galvez, who conceded defeat after initial results, complained on Monday that the opposition had faced unequal competition against the entire state apparatus being dedicated to favoring its candidate.
