NFL team news

With the 2022 NFL regular season now well underway, fans have already been treated to a multitude of impressive footballing action that has spanned across the various divisional rivals and conference competitors that the league provides, leaving many to question on who will provide the greatest challenge of earning passage into the postseason later this season, with some teams already shocking fans with their excellent early run of form.

The 2022/23 season is already proving to be an unmissable campaign for all football fanatics given the numerous high-scoring contests and last-gasp winners that have so often been on display featuring several the league’s top star names.

Following on from the success and entertainment of Super Bowl LVI weekend earlier this year, fans were also treated to a frantic off-season featuring the annual NFL Draft and a plethora of high-profile trades and free agency acquisitions that were completed between rivaling franchises.

The early few weeks of the season have already provided fans and analysts alike with a great number of talking points surrounding some the league’s top teams and even the biggest underachievers so far with several clubs looking to stake their claim as a perennial playoff contender.

When it comes to discussing a team that has likely surprised several fans with their excellent offensive play and imposing defensive stops, there maybe no greater contender to discuss than the 4-0 Philadelphia Eagles who, at this current juncture, are the only undefeated team remaining in the NFL after the Miami Dolphins’ 27-15 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday Night Football.

The Eagles have remained a major contender in the NFC for a majority of the last decade, especially in the years following on from their first ever Super Bowl victory back in 2017, but their recent run of form has skyrocketed their current NFL odds  to +700 and they’re seen as major candidates to claim their second Vince Lombardi trophy later this season.

When breaking down the Eagles’ elite roster of star players at both ends of the field, it is clear to see why the team is being held in such high regards and why they are now sighted as being major Super Bowl contenders.

  • A stellar offense featuring a star-studded Quarterback:

When discussing the main facets of the Eagles’ offense, QB Jalen Hurts deserves a great amount of credit for orchestrating the scoring when in possession of the football.

At just 24 years of age, Hurts is widely regarded as one of the best developing QB’s in the league today and has already showcased tremendous signs of being a dual-threat QB that can both pass effectively and rush into space whilst avoiding opposing defenders.

Hurts has already passed for 1,120 yards throughout his four games in the league so far which is tied for 5th from all first team QB’s, with four Touchdowns scored and an average QB rating of 60.7%.

In the opening four league games of the season, Hurts impressed in the Eagles’ narrow win against a defensively inept Detroit Lions roster before throwing for an interception against the Minnesota Vikings a week later.

Whilst this may have been sighted as early worries for Hurts and the Eagles faithful, the youngster was able to fight back and complete an astounding 84% of his passes with one touchdown scored from 333 passing yards and two touchdowns scored from 57 rushing yards.

In the Eagles comfortable victory over the Washington Commanders, Hurts passed for 3 touchdowns on 63% competition from 340 passing yards despite being sacked three times.

Despite a rocky start against the Jacksonville Jaguars a week later, with the first quarter featuring an interception that helped the Jags go up 14-0, Hurts and the Eagles battled back thanks to a few major Jacksonville fumbles and Hurts rushing for 38 yards and a touchdown to ensure the Eagles would remain undefeated.

While his stats are not a particular standout compared to other QB’s, Hurts has developed great chemistry with his O-Line and his partnering receivers that have kept the Eagles soaring over the NFC.

  • Defensively solid since coach Pederson’s departure:

Their contest against the Jaguars was the first game that would feature the former Eagles Super Bowl winning coach Doug Pederson on the opposing bench.

Philadelphia have always been a solid defensive squad and this season has featured several star defensive names step up to help the Eagles retain their undefeated record.

CB Darius Slay is tied for fifth in the NFL for most interceptions (2) as well as the efforts from LB T.J. Edwards who leads the team in tackles (33).

Fellow LB Haason Reddick and DT Fletcher Cox have both amassed three sacks this season making contests a nightmare for opposing QB’s and ensuring that the Eagles will place further pressure on their opponent’s offense.

Head coach Nick Sirianni, alongside his offensive and defensive coordinators, have utilized several sublime plays on both ends of the field that have ensured that the team remains as the only undefeated side left in the league, making trips to Lincoln Financial Field an absolute nightmare for opposing players, without the worry of battling the frigid temperatures.
