The 81st annual Golden Globe Awards 2024 were unveiled on Monday where Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” dominated the Hollywood awards nominations with nine nods for the blockbuster film.

Barbie’s nine nods included three of the six nods for best original song.

The film draws attention for nominations for best picture musical or Comedy as well as acting nominations for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

Oppenheimer,” the second film that closely followed Barbie”, recorded eight nominations. The nominations included best picture drama and actors– Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt.

Cedric “The Entertainer” and Wilmer Valderrama announced the nominations in 27 categories honoring the best in film and television, report Reuters and CBC News.

Hollywood’s awards season begins in January with the Globes, a red-carpet event where the two films will compete in different categories.

“Barbie,” will vie for best comedy or musical film alongside “American Fiction,” “The Holdovers,” and others.

“Oppenheimer” stars Cillian Murphy as the man behind the building of the atomic bomb. Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” the story of the murder of Native Americans in Oklahoma in the 1920s, was also among the competitors.

Family drama “Succession” led all series with nine nominations in television categories while the second “The Bear” led with five nominations.

Globe voters nominated two female directors – Gerwig and “Past Lives” director Celine Song—after criticism for a lack of diversity in the previous years.

Star Lily Gladstone in “Flower Moon,” gay Black American “Rustin” actor Colman Domingo, and Black American lead Jeffrey Wright in “American Fiction” are among the acting nominees.

Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks received nominations for their parts in “The Colour Purple”, but the story of Black Americans living in the early 1900s was not included in the competition.

Bradley Cooper was nominated for Best Actor while director for “Maestro,” earned a Best Drama nomination.

Organizers said the awards are being operated by New Globe owners– Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions– as a for-profit venture. With a 60% racial and ethnic diversity, the voting body currently consists of 300 journalist members from 75 different countries.
