Popular musician Aurelio Martinez Suazo was among the 12 people who died in a small plane crash into the Caribbean Sea in Honduras.

The accident happened on Monday after the Lanhsa Airlines plane was taking off from the Honduran island of Roatan, said the officials.

The aircraft departed at nightfall from Roatan and headed for the port of La Ceiba on the Honduran mainland.

Roatan is one of the Central American country’s main tourist destinations.

Well-known Honduran musician Aurelio Martinez Suazo was among the 12 dead, according to local media reports.

Martínez was a former member of Congress and a member of the Garifuna ethnic group. He also held US citizenship.

Garifuna is people of mixed indigenous and Afro-Caribbean descent. They originated from the island of St Vincent which has a dissimilar musical style.

Martínez grew up in Honduras’ Gracias a Dios region along the Caribbean coast in Honduras.

Before forming his group Lita Ariran, the singer was a member of Los Gatos Bravos.

Garifuna Soul, which is first album of Martinez, took him to Europe, the United States and other parts of the world.

According to the Kennedy Center, virtuosic musicianship and passionate performances of Martinez made him a mainstay of the La Cieba music scene.

According to police, the plane was carrying fifteen passengers along with two pilots and a flight attendant.
