Bayer Leverkusen became the first ever team to complete a whole season undefeated on Saturday since the Bundesliga started in 1963.

Victor Boniface and Robert Andrich’s early goals secured the league champion a 2-1 victory against FC Augsburg in their last game of the season, reports associated press.

The victory was their 28th win in 34 Bundesliga games.

Leverkusen, which won the title in April to end Bayern Munich’s 11-year spree, is the first team to complete an unbeaten season in any of Europe’s top five leagues since Juventus did back in the Italian Serie A in 2011-12.

Leverkusen didn’t lose a game in any competition all season, a record 51-game unprecedented run.

The winners had a firm grip on Augsburg, however, Mert Kömür pulled one back in the 62nd minute, pushing Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso to send on Florian Wirtz and Granit Xhaka, the star players he had been trying to rest before the Europa League and German Cup finals next week.

Local rival Cologne has been relegated. Cologne’s hopes of avoiding the drop evaporated fast in a 4-1 loss at Heidenheim.

It was very sad. To apologize perhaps lacks a little respect, Cologne goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe said of fans’ angry reaction.
