Nikki Haley says slavery was a US Civil War cause after criticism

Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley has sought to clarify her earlier comment that failed to mention slavery as a cause of the Civil War, hours after facing significant backlash.

Haley, who is vying to be her party’s nominee in the 2024 presidential election, did not name slavery in her response when a voter at Berlin in New Hampshire asked her what caused the war, which occurred between 1861 and 1865.

After drawing rebukes from Democrats and some of her opponents, Haley on The Pulse of NH, a radio show on Thursday morning, sought to walk back her comments, saying that of course, the cause behind the Civil War was about slavery.

According to an exchange captured by CNN and several other media outlets, an audience member asked Haley at the town hall during a visit on Wednesday night what she believed to be the cause of the Civil War.

Haley in response said she thinks the reason behind the US Civil War was basically how the government was going to run. She also said people could and couldn’t do. The freedom in what people could and couldn’t do.

In reply, the man who asked the question said Hale’s answer astonished him as she did not mention ‘slavery.

On Thursday morning, Haley told radio host Jack Heath said sought to defend earlier comments, saying that the Civil War was about slavery, after she received criticism on social media.

It is not clear whether the incident will have any impact on the 2024 election race, but Haley’s opponents were quick to criticize her.

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden posted a video of Haley’s exchange on social media.
