How to Calculate Tip on Calculator?
To calculate a tip, figure your bill amount, choose a tip percentage, and divide the result among people if needed.
What is a Tip?
A tip (gratuity) is an extra amount paid to reward service quality. Tips are usually a percentage of the bill—commonly 10%, 12.5%, 15%, 18%, 20%, or 25%. If a service charge is already included on your receipt, tipping may be optional.
Quick Steps
Enter Bill amount (USD).
Pick a Tip % preset (5%, 10%, 12.5%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) or type a Custom %.
Set People if you’re splitting the bill.
Turn on Exclude tax and enter Tax rate to tip on the pre‑tax amount (Optional).
Choose a Rounding rule (to whole dollars) (Optional)..
Read Tip amount, Total, Per person, Tip per person, or click Copy summary.
Note: Currency is fixed to $ USD. There is no currency dropdown.
Simple Tip Calculator Uses Guide
Bill amount (USD)
Type the total from your receipt. The field accepts digits, dots, and common locale separators. The calculator formats results as $ with two decimals.
Tip percentage
Click a preset (5%, 10%, 12.5%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) or type a Custom % (0–100). The tip is calculated instantly.
People
Enter how many people will share the bill (minimum 1). Results show both Per person (full share with tip) and Tip per person (tip portion only).
Exclude tax when calculating tip (optional)
Turn this on if your bill includes sales tax but you want to tip on the pre‑tax price. When enabled and a Tax rate is entered, the tip base becomes:Pre‑tax = Bill ÷ (1 + Tax%)
The Total still includes tax; only the tip base changes.
Rounding (optional)
All rounding is to whole dollars ($) and never changes the bill itself—only the tip adjusts to keep math consistent:
No rounding – leaves all values as calculated.
Round tip – rounds the tip amount to the nearest dollar; Total is recomputed as Bill + Tip.
Round total – rounds the final Total (bill + tip) to the nearest dollar.
Safety rule: if rounding would drop the total below the bill, the total clamps to the bill and the tip becomes $0.00.
Round total per person (round up) – rounds each person’s total up to the next whole dollar; the tip increases by the exact difference so totals balance.
What Each Result Means
Tip amount – total tip across the bill.
Total – bill + tip after any rounding rules.
Per person – each person’s full payment (bill + tip).
Tip per person – each person’s tip portion only.
Examples
A) Standard tip:
Bill $65.50, Tip 12.5% → Tip $8.19, Total $73.69.
With 3 people → Per person $24.56, Tip per person $2.73.
B) Pre‑tax tipping:
Bill $107.50 (includes 7.5% tax), Tip 15% → Pre‑tax $100.00, Tip $15.00, Total $122.50.
D) Group split + rounding up per person:
Bill $58.40, Tip 15%, People 2 → Raw tip $8.76, Raw total $67.16.
Round total per person (up) → Each pays $34.00; new total $68.00; new tip $9.60 (increased by $1.44).
E) Round total with safety rule:
Bill $50.10, Tip 1% → Raw total $50.60.
Round total → nearest dollar $51 (tip adjusts to $0.90).
If a very small tip caused rounding down to $50, the tool would clamp the total to $50.10 or set tip to $0.00 so the total never goes below the bill.
