Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett criticized Republican Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene on Friday, calling her “racist” after a tense House Oversight markup on Thursday that quickly went into personal attacks, reports CNN.
As the panel met to move forward with the contempt proceedings against Attorney General Merrick Garland over his refusal to turn over audio recordings of President Joe Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur, Greene, a Republican from Georgia, sparked controversy when she passed a comment on Crockett’s appearance.
Greene at the meeting had said Crockett’s “fake lashes” were messing up what she was reading.
Talking to reporters on Friday regarding the incident, Crockett said Greene decided that she was going to be that person out loud and out front, which she was not going to take lying down.
When CNN contacted Greene’s office, it said the only member that brought up any reference to color was congresswoman Crockett.
The House rules dictate that members cannot “engage in personalities,” entailing that they were not allowed to make offensive comments about another member.
If such a thing takes place, the member who was insulted is eligible to ask to strike the words from record and, if that happens, the offending party was not allowed to speak for the remainder of the proceeding.
During the markup, however, there was a failed vote to strike Greene’s comments from record and she was allowed to continue.
