Kitty Dukakis, the wife of former Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis, has passed away at her home in Brookline.
Michael Dukakis was the 1988 Democratic presidential nominee while Kitty was known for speaking frankly about her struggles with depression and addiction.
Kitty Dukakis, 88, was an activist first lady of Massachusetts and humanitarian.
After unsuccessful treatments for alcoholism and depression with the help of electroconvulsive therapy, she became a proponent of the treatment with her husband.
Her family said in a statement that when Dukakis died on Friday night, her family, and her son, John Dukakis were present beside her.
John said the cause behind the death of his mother was complications from dementia.
Kitty fought to make the world better and shared her vulnerabilities to help others face theirs.
The family said she had a keen sensitivity to people from all walks of life. She was also loving, feisty and fun.
Michael shared a desirable partnership for over 60 years and loved each other deeply.
Kitty Dukakis stumped tirelessly for political campaigner during her husband’s presidential efforts in 1988.
Michael called her a key influence in his decision to seek the presidency.
Born on December 26, 1936, Kitty was also figured in the opening question of the 1988 presidential debate.
During her husband’s three nonconsecutive terms, Kitty Dukakis supported Michael Dukakis against Vice President George HW Bush during his unsuccessful presidential run.
President Jimmy Carter appointed Dukakis in 1978 to the first President’s Commission on the Holocaust.
She told the National Governors Association in 1983 that perhaps, the Holocaust was the most important object lesson in man’s inhumanity to man in the entire history of civilization.
