Nosferatu (1922) is a silent German Expressionist vampire film directed and produced by FW Murnau and Enrico Dieckmann Albin Grauwhich, respectively. It is an unauthorised and unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula (1897).
The production company Prana Film faced a legal battle for illegally adapting the story from the Novel Dracula.
Later, Bram Stoker’s wife, Florence Balcombe, made further efforts to prevent anyone from using Dracula without permission.
The 1922 movie aroused the hornet’s nest from the day it began filming, and it moved forward without considering the book’s copyright.
In the US, Stoker forgot to copyright his work. The story is currently public domain.
The novel writer passed away on April 20, 1912, and left behind the story for his wife Florence Balcombe.

Eggers started development on Nosferatu in 2015 when he planned to make it his second film. He finally chose to stay its production describing it as a passion project.
The authorities did the world premiere of Nosferatu in Berlin, Germany, on December 2, 2024. Focus Features in the United States and Universal Pictures released the film globally on December 25, 2024.
